Is it really August? The weather thus far this month has likely led a lot of Kansas residents to scratch their heads and maybe even look closely at the calendar, just to verify that it really is August.
Over the past couple of weeks, for example, Pratt has only experienced three days with highs in the low 90s, while most days settled for a high temperature somewhere in the 80s (and today, Wednesday, it is only supposed to make it into the low 70s).
With California being incinerated, a hurricane threatening Hawaii, and the east coast recently flooding, here in Kansas we are enjoying perhaps the best August weather of anywhere in the country. Perhaps it would be a good year for vacationers to consider the Sunflower State as their vacation destination. Here's what we offer: mild weather and temperatures, green prairies and hills, and moderate, for the most part, rainstorms. Yes, it's highly unusual and apt to change with the next strong wind blowing in from the south, but we won't mention that.
This August, many seem to be having difficulty keeping up with their mowing. That was readily apparent last evening. A few miles north of town just off of Highway 281 my wife and I observed, while out cycling, four yards in a row being mowed.
Yes, it's August in Kansas, a month usually synonymous with hot and dry. And yes, the forecast for the remainder of the week places us smack dab in the middle of typical August weather.
But it sure has been nice so far, hasn't it?
