I don't have the vaguest conception of the Jonas Brothers' musical discography, because, well I'm a grown man, so why would I? More importantly, I am approaching brother Nick's solo debut, "Who I Am," as a Jonas neophyte, with only my pre-conceived notions clouding my judgment.
That said, Nick Jonas & the Administration are a fairly potent rock/soul outfit. On much of the record, Jonas comes off as a sort of John Mayer Jr. in sound and voice, such as the rolling "Olive & An Arrow," which explores Jonas' political side and his view of American duality, and the power-pop title track.
Surrounding himself with former bandmates of Prince, Boyz II Men, Mayer and Santana, I can't really say how much guitar Jonas himself actually plays, but the work is all good.
Working with some of Prince's crew has rubbed off; the 17-year-old works a decent falsetto on a few tracks and even works a little Stevie Wonder vibe in the bouncy "Last Time Around" and the nasal clavinet of "State of Emergency."
With the exception of a rock-inspired trip waaaaay over the top ("Conspiracy Theory"), "Who I Am" is a solid collection of tunes from the youngest Jonas Brother.
