Forget candy and flowers, the best Valentine’s gift is one that helps a good cause and provides an afternoon of entertainment, according to Jack Ewing, who is master of ceremonies for a Sweetheart Concert on Valentine’s Day.
The $10 ticket price is a donation to the Cannonball Trail Chapter of the American Red Cross. The show begins at 2 p.m. Feb. 14 at Carpenter Auditorium on the Pratt Community College campus. Early arrivals can get in on a sing-along with Sandy, Ewing’s sister. His niece, Piper Leigh, will join him in handling the emcee duties.
The first half of the show is an area talent show, Ewing said, featuring Ron and Kathy Lindberg of Lewis, Peyton Whitfield and the Sweet Adelines. Verlan Elliott will add a western flavor to an afternoon of love songs and the Ande Johnson Ballroom Dancers will display some fancy footwork. PCC music instructor J.J. Rupe will add class, as in classical music, to the event, Ewing said, and Debra Nascar will sing an operatic aria.
Recording artists Piper Leigh and husband Mark Bowling will be on stage for the second half of the concert.
Tickets are available at the door or in advance from the Red Cross office at 114 N. Main, The Peoples Bank Dillons branch and from chapter officers Sue Peachey, Frank Hopkins, Dean Simon, Robert Torres, Sara Eubank and Scott Jackman.
A new feature of the winter fund-raiser offers a chance to escape the cold Kansas winter. The grand prize for the Get Away-Give Away is a 5-day Caribbean cruise. Second prize is $1,000, third and fourth prizes are $500 each and the fifth ticket drawn is worth $100.
Only 300 tickets will be printed, and a donation of $50 per ticket is suggested.
Tickets also admit two to the Sweetheart Concert. Prizes will be drawn at the concert, however winners do not have to be present to win.
The goal is to net $10,000 from donations.
“We want to make sure we’re here when disaster strikes,” said Donna Meier Pfeifer, executive director of the Cannonball Trail Chapter of the American Red Cross.
Money raised at the concert and give-away will help implement a cooperative program with other volunteer-based organizations.
The tornado that struck Greensburg nearly three years ago was an “eye-opener that we’ve got to pull together,” Meier Pfeifer said, explaining a new Community Organizations Active in Disaster program.
The intent will be to expand CPR and safety training in the surrounding counties which Cannonball Trail also serves. The result will be an increased visibility for Red Cross in the outlying areas and the ability to mobilize more trained volunteers when a disaster occurs.
