The upcoming Music Theatre for Young People production of “The Pirates of Penzance” will feature two Pratt High School students in the cast.

Sophomore Brittnee Hill will take the lead role of “Mabel” while junior Sam Eastes will play the part of “Samuel” one of the pirates.

The pair is busy with rehearsals and has to travel to Wichita four times a week on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday to learn music and blocking.

Hill suggested the pair audition for the play and Eastes said like fun. Auditions were held Jan. 7 and both had callbacks on Jan. 8.

Both students have been in productions before most recently in the Pratt High School production of “High School Musical.”

The auditions for Pirates was much more difficult. They had to prepare a piece of music to sing and had to do a dance audition. Eastes said he wasn’t that good of a dancer and got some help from Hill to prepare for auditions that were much more challenging than PHS dance auditions.

“The dance auditions were a lot more harder,” Hill said.

Taking on their school classes and extra curricular activities plus being in the show has taken a toll on the two students.

“It’s definitely been stressful,” Eastes said. “We have to do our homework going to and from rehearsal. It’s made our lives a lot busier.”

Hill said this is very challenging music and requires a lot of work. But she enjoys how seriously everyone takes their parts and how the directors won’t settle for mediocrity.

Eastes said he enjoys that everyone wants to be there and how talented is everyone in the cast.

Performances for “The Pirates of Penzance” are Friday, Saturday and Sunday, March 2, 3 and 4 in the Mary Jane Teall Theater at Century II in Wichita.
