A piece of the action is what she wanted so Julie Dearinger filed to run for Pratt City Commissioner. It is her first time running for any office but when she decided to make the run she did not hesitate.
“There’s nothing like jumping in with both feet,” Dearinger said. “I want to make positive things happen.”
Dearinger said Pratt is a wonderful town but more young families need to move here and she wants to help make that happen.
“I want to take a role and take action,” Dearinger said.
She wants to listen to the citizens and find answers. She sees herself in Pratt for the long haul and wants to see what Pratt can be for her future grandchildren.
She has read a lot of press and sees a lot of conflict in the community. She has heard lots of concerns for the town, growth, high taxes and how those things will affect the future of Pratt.
The people want a voice in the decisions that will determine that future and she wants to be that voice, Dearinger said.
The current city commission has businessmen. She wants to bring the mom-next-door viewpoint to the city commission.
“That’s what I can bring to the commission,” Dearinger said.
She wants to listen to ideas that will bring young families to Pratt. That will mean addressing those high taxes and how they impact businesses and families wanting to move to Pratt. She wants to help businesses grow and flourish.
“I’m very concerned with property tax. I want to educate my self why taxes are so high and what can bring them down,” Dearinger said.
She wants to examine city reserve funds and determine the best way to use them.
In life, the most obvious answer is usually the best answer to a problem but with every city issue all possibilities, including the unobvious answers, have to be examined.
She wants to be a part of the solution and not just a voice that disagrees with the status quo.
She is pleased that so many in Pratt have stepped forward to run for commissioner to help move Pratt in a positive direction.
Dearinger grew up in St. Leo and attended school there through the eight grade. St. Leo has no high school so her family moved to Cunningham and she graduated from CHS in 1992. She married Brad in 1993 and they lived in Dodge City where both attended community college. They later moved back to St. Leo.
She has worked as an assistant manager at Subway and Gambino’s Pizza in Pratt. She had a very positive experience with nurses during her three pregnancies. That experience, plus the fact that day care for three children is expensive, led her to towards nursing.
Eventually she decided to become a nurse and took the nursing program at Pratt Community College, graduating with an RN degree in 2001. She has worked at Pratt Regional Medical Center since 2006 on the medical floor, in the birthing suite and operating the computer charting system. She later took her nursing bachelors degree at the Wichita campus for Tabor College in 2009.
While they lived in St. Leo the children were active in sports in Pratt. With her working in Pratt it made sense for the family to move to Pratt.
“It’s the best decision we ever made,” Dearinger said. “The towns people are really great and we’ve been really blest.”
Dearinger is 35 and married to Brad. They have four children, Jessica, 16, Bradley, 13 and Brenden 12.
