GIRARD - On the road, Baxter Springs split a series with the Girard Lady Trojans. Managing only five hit’s the Lady Lions lost the first game 4-2 on Girard’s Shayun Grosstephan’s strong pitching. In game two, Baxter Springs survived a late inning rally by Girard and pulled out a 7-5 win with the Lady Lion having 13 hits. Baxter Springs is now 6-5 for the season.
Baxter Springs was hitless except for a base hit by Abbey Underhill in the second inning of the opening game. The Lady Lions scored their only two runs in the fifth. Catcher Ryleigh Sills led off with a walk, and Ashlyn Potter entered as a courtesy runner. Karley Bailey reached on base and advanced Potter with a second base error. The two runners came in on a Cheyenna Von Moss single.
Girard had scored their four runs in the third inning with three runs, and one in the fourth. The Lady Trojans seemed to “hit’em where they ain’t” and Baxter Springs seemed to always find a glove.
Baxter Springs had an opportunity to score in the seventh inning. Bailey and Hailey Horn led off with base hits, and advanced to third and second on Ryleigh Sills sacrifice bunt. The following two batters ended the inning.
Girard scored in the first inning in the second game, and Baxter Springs answered back in the second inning on Sarah Spencer‘s solo centerfield homerun. Girard added a second run in their second on a walk, a 6-3 sacrifice, and a base hit.
Baxter Springs had a big fourth inning bringing 10 batters to the plate scoring four runs, while stranding three. Chelsey Madden batted first and knocked a triple. Spencer followed with a base hit, then stole second. Lefty Underhill went opposite field down the left line for a two RBI double.

Girard came back with one run in the fifth and sixth innings to close the score down 5-4. The Lady Lions added two needed insurance runs in the final seventh inning. Spence added her third base hit of the game with an infield blooper, and Madden followed with an infield slow roller single. Spencer laid down a bunt probably meant to be a sacrifice, but the catcher overthrew first base to bring in Spence. K. Sills hit a fly ball to the fence, but a great catch held the runners. Underhill hit an old fashioned Texas Leaguer in left field bringing in Madden for her third RBI.
After giving up three hits, two walks, and hitting a batter in the fifth and sixth innings, the young freshman Lady Lion pitcher was out of gas going into the seventh.
The Lady Trojans started the seventh with three straight base hits and a walk scoring their fifth run. Fellow freshman Delainy Anderson, who pitched the first game, came in and shut down the Lady Trojans with the bases loaded with two force outs and first base pop-up.
