BAXTER SPRINGS - After much deliberation, the Baxter Springs City Council has come to an agreement on the most efficient way to improve the city's financial situation. After carefully considering several options, including increasing the mill levy, the council has settled on proposing a one percent retail sales tax increase.

"This would help bring revenue in from everybody who comes through Baxter to eat or shop," said Councilman Gary Sisco. "It doesn't just leave the burden on the taxpayer alone."

A work session was scheduled for the purpose of refining the proposal's specifications. A first read of the proposed resolution is scheduled for the city council's meeting on June 13. If the resolution passes the increase would likely take effect March 1, 2018.
