Nelouise Stapp (nee Hodges) passed away July 12, 2017 at Copper Canyon Care Center in Tucson, AZ after a long and rewarding life. Nelouise was born February 18, 1921 in Pratt, Kansas. After graduating from Pratt High School, her interest and talent in music led Nelouise to pursue studies at Bethany College in Lindsborg, Kansas. After graduating in 1943 Nelouise taught junior and senior high school music for a few years before returning to pursue a Master of Music degree from Northwestern University (1949. Nelouise returned to her beloved Lindsborg to teach and also serve as organist at Bethany Lutheran Church. During this period she met fellow Bethany grad Ray Stapp. They were married from 1951 until Ray’s death in 2000. Ray’s career in Art Education took them to Edinboro, PA (Edinboro University) and then Charleston, IL (Eastern Illinois University. In both of these locations Nelouise mentored numerous piano students in her home and was a dedicated church organist and choir director.
After retirement the couple moved to Denver, Colorado and were active members of Augustana Lutheran Church. There Nelouise directed the Senior Elite Choir, composed of dedicated older members. After Ray’s death Nelouise moved to Tucson, Arizona where she lived until her death.
She is survived by her two sons: Eric Stapp (Luz) of Tucson, AZ and Paul Stapp (Chris DiPietro) of St. Paul, MN. She also leaves three grandchildren: Jessica Stapp of Tucson, AZ, Jay Stapp of Portsmouth, NH and Peter Stapp of St. Paul, MN. She also had two devoted step-grandchildren: Jennifer Sherwood of Bothell, WA and Christopher Sherwood of Renton, WA.
