Skyline's first ever car show is the first of several events to celebrate the 50 year anniversary of USD 438.
Car enthusiasts will be heading to Skyline school this Saturday for the first Skyline car show "Thunderbirds on the Prairie." The show is the first of several events to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the first graduating class of Skyline back in May of 1968. The event is part of the Skyline 50 by 50 campaign to raise $50,000 by the 50th anniversary to fund school projects.
Registration for the car show starts at 8 a.m. at the school with the show itself running from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. with awards at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 28. Besides classic and newer cars, participants are encouraged to bring trucks, motor cycles, tractors to the event that will feature food, automotive vendors, a raffle, silent auction and children's activities, said David Schmidt, event co-organizer.
Thunderbird cars are expected at the event, along with a variety of other makes and models, to celebrate the Skyline Thunderbirds 50 years of education, Schmidt said.
Local businesses have donated items for the silent auction and raffle. The community businesses have been very supportive with donations for the event, Schmidt said.
Special goodie bags will be presented to the first 50 entrants. Trophies will be awarded in 11 categories including: Best in Show-Superintendent's Choice; Principal's choice: Classic & New/Custom (classic is 1975 or older) Thunderbird; Ford; Chevy; Mopar; Rat Rods; Motorcycles; Truck's; Tractors; Others. Four event sponsorship levels are available. Registration is $25 with each participant receiving a free t-shirt and a dash plaque.
The main event for the 50th anniversary will be Saturday, April 28, 2018. The event will feature a dinner, auction, tours of the building and lots of time for socializing, said Michelle Domsch, superintendent secretary.
On Friday, April 27, the school will host a student job fair with many of the alumni meeting with the students and telling them about their jobs.
Alums are encouraged to bring memorabilia for display. The Pratt County Historical Society is seeking memorabilia donations for the Historical Museum.
