Skyline seventh grader Canon Lauffer was smiling when he spelled "mandible" and won the Pratt County Spelling Bee out of 42 contestants on Jan. 30 at Liberty Middle School. Lauffer was also the Skyline Spelling Bee Champion. He will compete in the state spelling bee on March 3 in the Beach Performing Arts Center at Fort Hays State University. Lauffer received a dictionary from Bolen Office Supply and will receive a $100 award from First National Bank.
Tied for second in the competition were Liberty Middle School students Michael Dishman-7th grade and Dyllan Lunsford-8th grade. A mandible is a jaw or jawbone, especially the lower jawbone in mammals and fishes.
