The 2018 Miss Kansas pageant in Pratt, Kansas is underway!

Miss Kansas 2018 got off to a patriotic start Wednesday, June 6 as Jane Schulte Goodheart, Miss Kansas 1973 opened the show singing the national anthem. Thirty-four contestants took the stage in red, white and blue tops, paired with blue jeans and high heels for their opening number. Miss Kansas 2017 Krystian Fish followed with a welcoming address to let all those present know they are "worth more than gold."
After Fish performed a moving tribute to those with disabilities by singing "They Just Keep Moving the Line," it was time to get down to business with interview questions, lifestyle and fitness swim suit competition, talent and evening gowns.
Rising to the top of their divisions on the first day of competition were Miss Heart of Kansas Madison Schoenkase, who won the swimwear preliminary, and Miss Sunflower Alexandria Black, who took first in the talent competition singing "I Who Have Nothing."
Other notable moments in day one of the pageant included Miss Sante Fe Trail Kyann Eslick, the only deaf contestant, who sang and hand-signed a beautiful and haunting melody called "Like I'm Gonna Lose You." Miss Manhattan Alexis Smith was a crowd favorite with a ventriloquist act, "The Auctioneer." Smith's accomplice on stage was Frank, the same dummy used by her aunt, a Miss Kansas contestant 21 years ago, in a similar ventriloquism act. Miss Gateway to the West Katherine Wurzer was a fitness inspiration in her jazz dance "Sparkling Diamonds."
Miss Kansas contestants from the Sigma group sparkled in their evening wear selections and the Kappa group answered the interview question, "What is a significant result of your platform work this year?"
Results from the evening wear and interview portions of the contest will be announced Saturday and the contestants now prepare for the segment switch for stage performances Thursday.
