A two-vehicle accident involving two semi trucks claimed two lives and injured another Wednesday afternoon, June 13, about 11 miles west of Pratt on U.S. 54.
A two-vehicle accident in Pratt County on June 13 has claimed two lives and injured a third.
Killed in the accident were Arturo Mora, 42 of Chaparral, N.M. and Patricio Maturino, 36 of El Paso, Texas.
Evaristo Mora, 63 of Chaparral, N.M. was eastbound on U.S. 54 about three miles west of Cullison in a 2001 Kenworth semi and trailer when he approached slower moving traffic and made an evasive maneuver to the left to avoid the traffic and struck, head-on, a 2013 Volvo semi and trailer driven by Maturino, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol accident web site.
Both trucks came to a stop on the north side of the highway. The Kenworth and trailer was on its side in the ditch and the Volvo remained up right on the shoulder.
Maturino was killed at the scene. Mora's passenger Arturo Mora died at Kingman County Hospital while being transported. Evaristo Mora was transported to Wesley Medical Center where he remains in fair condition.
Maturino and Evaristo Mora were wearing seat belts at the time of the accident, Arturo Mora was not wearing a seat belt. The accident was reported at 3:30 p.m. and was 11 miles west of Pratt.
A KHP Critical Highway accident Response Team was on scene for several hours surveying the accident.
Kansas Department of Transportation routed traffic around the accident site for several hours.
