The Pratt High girls tennis team made improvements and gained experience at the Hillsboro tournament--earning several individual medals and successes.
The Greenback netters are a young team, but they took the battle to the Hillsboro tournament on Tuesday earlier this week.
The #1 singles player, Erin Jackson, a sophomore, went 2-1 to place 3rd, losing to a solid Wichita Collegiate player. Her losing match was a close battle and could have gone either way.
“Erin needs more consistent reps with the players at the higher level and she is working to get there,” said head girls tennis coach Tate Thompson.
The #1 doubles team, Kahrie Stegman and Vanessa Leckner, juniors, placed 4th. The #2 singles player, Rachel Reichenberger, a sophomore, placed 4th as well. Both lost to Collegiate players in the third place game.
Madeline Drake, a freshman and Charlene Gangl, a junior, won their first match in #2 doubles, an impressive feat for first time players.
The girls played for the first time last Thursday at Lyons. Erin Jackson ended up with 3rd place, as did Kahrie Stegman and Vanessa Leckner in doubles. Rachel Reichenberger came back with a 1st place medal to end the tournament.
“The girls played well, getting better as court time starts to accumulate. Overall, we are seeing improvements each week," Thompson said.
For most of the girls, this is only their first or second season playing. That makes for an inexperienced varsity team, but they are improving every practice.
Thompson said he was impressed with how his team played on Tuesday.
“These girls are positive and hard working, so they will see the results improving each time out,” he said.
The team travels to Sterling on Thursday.
