Budget funding in 2010 will provide the majority of the funding to complete the remodel of the former JC Foods building into the new Pratt Fire Department building.
Exterior work on the building is nearing completion but the funding for the majority of the interior work will come from the budget money for 2010, said Pratt Fire Chief David Kramer.
In the meantime, work is nearing completion on the exterior portion of the building. The new driveway and interior-parking floor are complete. Some street brickwork has to be finished.
To meet drainage issues, a new concrete floor was poured on top of the existing floor in the building. This allowed for a new driveway with an increase in elevation from the old parking lot to assure that water would flow away from the building and not get inside the building, Kramer said.
An area was not poured but left to dirt. An honor garden is planned for that area with a plaque dedicated to the volunteer firefighters that serve Pratt. Flagpoles are also planned for that area. The plans for the area not completely finished yet.
The south portion of the parking lot will remain a public parking area for over flow for events in Liberty Middle School, Pratt High School and the Municipal Building.
The new façade is complete and the doors for the parking bays are in place. The new fire truck doors are two feet wider than the doors at the Municipal Building. The big fire truck only has six inches of clearance on both sides so the truck drivers are anxious to get into the new building.
“It will be nice to have the additional room,” Kramer said.
Entrance doors need to be installed and the building has to be painted. Recent wet weather has delayed painting but dry weather should help them get started.
“We’re waiting on the painters to get done with the painting,” Kramer said.
“We’re waiting for people to get done with individual exterior work.”
On the interior much work has to be done. The department hopes to complete the interior work and move into the facility by the middle of 2010.
Interior walls will be constructed to create office space, a day room, a large training room, public meeting room, a small kitchen area, handicapped accessible bathrooms and sleeping rooms.
Much construction, painting, electrical and plumbing needs to be done. The firefighters plan on doing as much of the work themselves as they can to help save money. They want to make the move as soon as possible.
“They are anxious to get it going. They are willing to help out anyway they can,” he said.
The new building will house the two trucks currently housed at the Municipal Building plus a new breathing air system truck that has not been put into service yet. The breathing air truck will allow firefighters to refill their air pacs on-site at fires. The breathing air system truck should go on-line in the next couple of months.
The building is 120 feet by 90 feet, the bay area is 70 feet by 70 feet and the office area is 50 by 70 feet.
Total cost of the project is $260,000. The Alltel tower next to the building accounts for $60,000 while the rest of the $200,000 will come from the city.
