Two area men remain hospitalized in Wichita after suffering serious and critical injuries in a two-vehicle accident shortly after noon Thursday, Sept. 16, in northwest Pratt County.

Injured in the accident were 38-year-old Charles Kruse Jr. of Haviland and 55-year-old Theodore Jorns of Preston, said Pratt County Sheriff Vernon Chinn.

The accident occurred at 12:23 p.m. at the intersection of NW 70th Street and NW 30th Ave. that is three miles west of north U.S. 281 on NW 70th Street.

Kruse was eastbound on NW 70th Street in a 1989 GMC Suburban when the vehicle was struck broadside in the driver’s door by a southbound 2002 Ford Escape driven by Jorns who was driving his U.S. Postal Service route.

The force of the impact rolled the Suburban and Kruse was ejected, landing several feet away from the Suburban in a CRP field on the southeast corner of the intersection.

The Escape landed on its side in the intersection and it took rescue workers several minutes to cut Jorns free using the jaws-of-life, Chinn said.

Pratt County EMS transported both men to Pratt Regional Medical Center where an Eagle Med helicopter transported Kruse to Via Christi St. Francis Hospital in Wichita. Pratt County EMS later transported Jorns by ambulance to Via Christi St. Francis as well.

Kruse is listed in critical condition and Jorns is listed in serious condition.

Kruse was not wearing his seat belt and it is unknown if Jorns was wearing his seatbelt. The two were the only occupants of the vehicles.

The intersection is uncontrolled with no stop signs or yield signs. The accident is still under investigation.

Officials from the Pratt Post Office retrieve all of the mail from Jorns’ vehicle before it was moved.
