Gov. Kathleen Sebelius has appointed several youth members to the Kansas Advisory Group on Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention.
“Maintaining an effective juvenile justice system is important to young Kansans and our society as a whole,” Sebelius said. “Also, I’m encouraged when young people are willing to serve in a volunteer capacity to help others so I commend our three appointees.”
Alayna Howell, Coats, currently attends Central Christian College of Kansas. She previously attended Pratt Community College and Skyline High School. During high school, Howell served as class president for four years. She also served five years as a 4-H officer. Howell’s term with the advisory group will expire in 2009.
Emily Deaver, Augusta, attends Wichita State University where she is on the Dean’s List and a member of the National Honor Society. She is the reigning Miss Kansas. Deaver’s term with the advisory group will expire in 2012.
Timothy Bacon, Berryton, currently attends Washburn University and is pursuing a criminal justice degree. Bacon is an Eagle Scout and has received the Kansas Adjutant General’s certificate of special recognition. Bacon’s term with the advisory group will expire in 2010.
The Kansas Advisory Group on Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention was established by the Governor in accordance with the Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Act to determine; advocate for; and promote the best interests of juveniles in Kansas.
Reflecting its purpose, the Kansas Advisory Group reviews juvenile justice policy; advises policymakers on issues affecting the juvenile justice system; and strives to keep Kansas in compliance with the federal act.
Per State statute, one fifth of the board’s membership is comprised of individuals under the age of 24 at the time of appointment.
