In the spirit of Christmas, Pratt Community College held their annual office decorating competition between multiple campus departments.
The decorating portion of the competition began on Nov. 11 but many of the offices that competed did not start decorating until Nov. 29, just a mere four days before the judging.
The rules for the competition were simple. Any office that chose to compete needed to sign up through the Secretary to the President Emily Meireis and let her know if the office would be decorating with a theme or simply decorating.
All offices and student organizations were allowed to compete in the competition. In total five offices and one student organization competed.
The results of the competition were in on Dec. 3 after the judges had a chance to tour the offices.
The computer department took first place with their theme “A Very Geeky Christmas,” which included a fireplace made out of computer towers and a Christmas tree constructed out of computer parts.
The “Have a Merry Beaver Christmas” theme, which was decorated by the Student Success Center, took second place. This theme included Christmas decorations with a PCC Beaver twist to them.
The admissions office took third place with their theme “Christmas in Your Hometown.” This theme involved each separate office being decorated as a store that might be seen in a home town. Some of the stores included a Disney store, a stuffed animal and a pet shop.
“This was the first year we have ever competed,” said Network/Server Administrator Brian Beaman. “We just wanted to use things that we use in our jobs on a daily basis.”
The student organization decorating competition went to the only student organization that competed, Club International. The organization won 100 dollars with their theme “I'll have a Blue Christmas without You”.
Other offices that competed included office 57 with their theme “Santa’s Workshop,” which turned each cubicle into a part of Santa’s Workshop. The nursing department also competed with the theme of “12 Days of Christmas”. To pull this theme together, each office in Chandler Hall was decorated to represent a different day of the 12 Days of Christmas.
The prizes given for the decorating contest was a major factor in the amount of effort the offices put into their themes. The first place prize was that everyone in the office earned a day of vacation and two meal tickets to the PCC cafeteria.

The second place office received a half day of vacation and two meal tickets, while third place received two meal tickets. Originally the winning offices only received two meal tickets, but when interest for the contest began to decrease, the prizes were enhanced so that days of vacation could be won.
“Prizes were secondary to the thrill of competition,” said Admissions Recruiter Stacey Fisher. “Most offices just wanted to win for the bragging rights, but the prizes are cool too.”
The office decorating competition, now in its 20th year of existence, has become a tradition at PCC for faculty to show off their holiday creativity and win prizes in the process.
