The Pratt Recreation Department, Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks, and AmeriCorps volunteers are working together to provide free supervised activities for kindergarten through eighth grade students over spring break.
The Municipal Building will be open from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, March 15-18 for a full slate of fun, said Pratt Rec’s Carol Gerard.
“We’re real pleased to be able to offer something like this for the kids at this time,” she said.
Linda Lanterman, who oversees the KDWP programs that use AmeriCorps volunteers, came up with the idea. Recreation Director Bruce Pinkall quickly agreed.
“We have had some spring break activities in the past, but this is new, this is a new adventure,” Gerard said.
About eight AmeriCorps volunteers are expected to help supervise the children and organize the activities, including basketball, beach volleyball, crafts and table games.
Pre-registration is not required, but parents must sign in and out for children from kindergarten through fifth grade. Middle school students can come and go without signing in, Gerard said.
“This is going to be a safe, supervised environment for kids to have some fun for four days,” she added.
AmeriCorps is a federal government program, initiated under the Clinton administration, that provides volunteer services in a variety of circumstances across the country. The program is often described as a domestic Peace Corps.
