Captain Richard “Dick” Curran, 68, passed away Saturday, Jan. 2, 2010, after a massive stroke. Funeral services were held Jan. 6, at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church with the Rev. Martin Yost officiating.
Dick was born at home on Dec. 6, 1931 in Pratt. In his early years, he boarded at a private military academy prior to completing a degree in petroleum engineering from the University of Oklahoma, earning a Phi Beta Kappa key.
He served his country proudly as a first lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force as a member of the 95th Fighter Interceptor Squadron. During his service in the Air Force was assigned to Perrin Field and also Andrews Air Force Base, flying the F-86, F-105, and the A-6.
Upon his retirement from the Air Force, Dick became a pilot for American Airlines and attained the rank of captain. Thereafter, he was known throughout the community as “Captain,” and his proudest achievement was to pilot every type of plane in the American fleet.
An avid hunter and reader, Dick was also an enthusiastic supporter of the athletic program of the University of Oklahoma. A longtime member of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, he also belonged to the Texoma Chapter of the Alumni of the University of Oklahoma and the Grey Eagles club.
“Captain” is survived by his wife of more than 40 years, Diane Curran; three daughters and their families, Lauri Greenberg and husband David with Curran and Annabel; Kim Curran and Harmony; Amy and husband John Hunter Smith with Ellie and Jack Grady; also those he loved and considered family, Mr. and Mrs. Naif Risk, Jim and Sheri Fallon, Barrett and Mattingly; and Mrs. Helen Swinton of Pratt.
He was predeceased by both parents, five brothers, and a sister. He will be terribly missed by his dogs that enjoyed their walks up and down Crockett Street.
Pallbearers were Naif Risk, Judge Jim Fallon, Jerry Hatfield, Vance Hatfield, Jimmy Ray, Dr. Ruedi Good, Gerald Goodman, Jason Thomas, Jim Hankins, and Roy Saunders. Honorary pallbearers were Valdie Carr Jr., Don Martin, and Shannon Hankins.
The family would like to thank the staff and doctors of Wilson N. Jones Medical Center for the loving care given.
