JoElla Courtney, age 87, died Saturday, June 20, 2009 at Lakewood Senior Living Center in Pratt. She was born Sept. 27, 1921, in Fort Worth, Texas, the daughter of Thomas Earl and Berta Lee Hunter Box. On Dec. 28, 1946, she married Richard Scott Courtney at Hutchinson. He preceded her in death in August of 1989.
JoElla moved to Parkwood Village in Pratt the fall of 2006, coming from Wa Keeney. She was a life member and past matron of the Margaret Chapter #249 Order of the Eastern Star and received her 50 year pin in 2000. She was past guardian of Job’s Daughter Bethel #40 of Wa Keeney, past grand guardian of the State of Kansas, grand treasurer of the State of Kansas for 25 years and grand treasurer emeritus upon retirement.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church in WaKeeney, director of church nursery and kindergarten Sunday school class teacher for 15 years, served on the administrative board. She was on the board of trustees and treasurer of the United Methodist Women. She was a life member of Trego Lemke Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, treasurer for the WaKeeney City Bowling Association for 15 years, treasurer for the Trego County Arts Council, board member and treasurer of the WaKeeney Senior Citizen Center, WaKeeney Harmony Club member for 20 years and past president.
JoElla worked for five years at the Hinshaw Amana and Locker Plant, eight years for Dr. A.W. Dirks optometrist, managed R & M Dress Shop from 1971-72, was a receptionist for WaKeeney Medical Clinic from 1973-79 and was a receptionist for the City of WaKeeney from 1981-1986.
She is survived by three daughters, Kim Claycamp of Pratt, Lee Courtney Merrill and husband Patrick of Cannon Beach, Ore., and Jil Galloway and husband Max of Bedford Hills, N.Y.; two grandchildren, Adrienne Kirkendoll and husband J.C. of Cameron, Mo., and Marshall Claycamp and wife Erin of Olathe; and two great-grandchildren.
