Rep. Anthony Weiner, a New York Democrat, was still adamantly refusing to resign at the time this newspaper went to press. It seems he will not reverse himself anytime soon.
But the congressman was also adamant in denying that he had anything to do with sending a lewd photo of himself to a young woman via the Twitter social networking service. He wasn’t even sure at first that the photo was him. He was probably the victim of a hacker or another “vast right wing conspiracy.”
Quite suddenly, however, the denials stopped and the teary-eyed confessions began. After lying repeatedly over a period of days, Weiner decided to own up and “take full responsibility” for what turned out to be a string of photos delivered electronically to a string of young women.
Full responsibility does not include, it seems, resigning his office. He apparently believes like so many politicians that he can weather this scandal. And he may.
The real question, however, is should he remain in office? Can a man who denied guilt so adamantly, who lied so blatantly remain an effective and trusted public servant?
Anthony Weiner should take full responsibility for betraying the public trust by laying it down.
