LETTER: A passion for sports

I have never written a letter to the editor, but felt it was necessary to convey my positive feelings to those that read the Tribune. In my opinion we lost a fabulous sports editor when Melanie McGee stepped down from the position last week to take another job closer to home.

I have been a subscriber to The Pratt Tribune for several years now. When I first started my job as head men’s basketball coach at Pratt Community College six years ago there were virtually no articles written to cover the athletic programs at the college. I would say that the coverage for our two local high schools was average at best.

I have been involved with many different papers and many different sports writers in my 15 years of coaching at the high school and collegiate level. I have never been around a person so passionate about their job as a sports writer. It seemed Melanie was at a high school or college event every day. She probably covered two events most days. The articles in the paper each day proved that as well. She covered everything about the games/events so well.

I am sure she wasn’t getting rich with her salary at the Tribune, but yet seemed so concerned about doing a great job of covering the sports for this great community. I commend Melanie McGee for a job well done. I know she will be missed by the men’s basketball staff and players here at the college. I hope The Pratt Tribune can find a suitable replacement with the drive and desire to do as good a job as Melanie did.
