Pratt County citizens will soon be going to the polls to vote on a countywide sales tax proposition allowing Pratt Regional Medical Center to proceed with plans to build a much needed major addition to the hospital, which will provide a new patient care area.
As the senior member of the PRMC medical staff, I feel privileged and obligated to come forth with my support for passage of this issue. When I arrived here in 1979, PRMC was involved in a very large expansion. It is hard to believe now that over three decades have passed, but it has, and the changing times now reveal with stark clarity the fact that we are trying to practice modern medicine in a facility whose core area is over 60 years old.
Maintaining the area of the hospital that is 60 years old has become prohibitively expensive and remodeling has shown to be more costly than building a new addition.
Patient care at PRMC is excellent, but the facility itself is not. Patients often have a difficult time getting in and out of the restrooms. These restrooms are so small that wheelchairs cannot be used, and in some restrooms walkers are difficult or impossible to maneuver. This very week, I had a patient lose consciousness inside one of these restrooms. Luckily, he had not suffered a cardiac arrest. It would have been nearly impossible to get to him with emergency equipment and personnel. Our patients deserve to have restrooms that are adequate in size and accessibility. Not to mention, it should be unacceptable to expect four patients to share one very small restroom.
Pratt is positioned to continue to grow as a regional medical center. Our regional medical center is owned by the citizens of Pratt County. Please make this needed building project a reality by giving your support for this proposition.
