To the editor:
The Kansas state budget and the fiscal crisis continue to be a concern for many Kansans. The drastic impact of past and most recent budget cuts / allotments in the past two years, has affected our families, friends, and neighbors.
Children can’t get applications processed for essential healthcare, and individuals with disabilities can’t get the services they so desperately need.
For many years Kansas has prided itself in the services provided to all of its citizens. With the recent fiscal crisis in our state and across the country, services provided to individuals with disabilities, Kansas seniors, and persons of low income have had their funds repeatedly and severely cut. There is no more to cut! We know there are many truths about Kansas, including education being a priority, higher education is of importance for Kansans to enter the job market; we want to adequately provide services for elderly Kansans in the setting of their choice; and we want Kansans with disabilities to have choice and independence. The truth is taxes make it possible to provide essential government services.
Kansans must have a reasonable, thorough discussion of adequate funding of services in Kansas. Kansans are prepared to support tax increases where appropriate. The review and possible delay / repeal of all state tax credits and exemptions is where we start. This is not the Governor’s burden alone, so will our legislature tune in or drop out? Kansans are struggling, yet we refuse to be neglected. The time for discussion and true Kansas leadership is now.
