        • Green Valley hosts Fathers Day scramble Jun. 17, 2013
          Ask many men what they would prefer to do on Fathers Day and the answer is likely to be “play golf.” Fifteen 3-man teams agreed with that sentiment on Sunday as they gathered to compete in the annual Fathers Day Tournament sponsored by Green Valley.

          The post-season honors continue to accumulate for members of the Pratt High School softball team. After nine Lady Greenbacks were named to all-league teams by the Central Kansas League, four of those took it to the next level by being named 4A All-State by the Kansas Softball Coaches Association.

          The Thunderstix 12U girls traveling softball team went 4-0 to repeat as champions of the Larned invitational last weekend. They will play this coming weekend at the Southlakes Complex in Wichita.

          The Pratt High School baseball and softball teams both ended the 2013 campaign with trips to their respective state tournaments. As might be expected from such successful squads, each was well-represented when the Central Kansas League passed out its all-league awards following the season.

          The Pratt Thunderstix traveling softball team has gotten the summer off to a good start. In the recent Pratt Shootout, the Thunderstix went 4-0 to capture first place in the tournament. Currently 15-3 on the season, the Thunderstix have also taken a 2nd at the Pratt Diamond Invitational and a 3rd at the Salina Blue and Gold Tournament.

The second-year pro was simply relaxing at home Monday night, watching Miami rout the Indiana Pacers 99-76 to set up a showdown with San Antonio in the NBA Finals.           The traditionally strong baseball program in Pratt is set to continue as the 'boys of summer' prepare to once again take the field.One change is that Pratt High School head coach Pat Stivers will be heading up the Legion team, the Pratt 86ers, after several seasons of managing the Junior Legion squad. He will be assisted by Mike Forshee, PHS softball coach. Ron Hill, PHS assistant baseball coach will be managing the Junior Legion this summer.

          There weren’t a boatload of Skyline Thunderbirds at the state track meet in Wichita over the weekend, but the ones who were there did well—very well, indeed.Sprinters Morgan Flowers and Jessica DeWeese each brought home a silver medal, and distance runner Roman Ibarra narrowly missed medaling in his two races.

          The Pratt High School track team was shut out at the state track meet over the weekend. No Greenback boys qualified for the state meet, and none of the 11 girls who made it to WSU were able to break onto the medal stand.

          On Friday, the Pratt High School girls softball team took home the third place trophy from the 4A state tournament held in Salina. After advancing to the semifinals on Thursday by downing Frontenac 10-4, PHS dropped a heartbreaker to Augusta 4-3 on Friday to fall to the 3rd place game. Pratt then put away Paola 5-3 to claim the 3rd place trophy.

          SALINA - If ever a grand slam changed the complexion of a game, it was during Pratt's first-round state tournament game against Frontenac Thursday evening in Salina.Frontenac and Pratt had exchanged big blows through the first four innings. The Raiders jumped on top 2-0 in the first on a home run by senior Lindsey Gorham. Pratt came back with a two-run homer by Savannah Buntemeyer in the third as part of a four-run inning.

          The 2A track regional at Sublette was bulging with quality performers last Friday. As a result, only the very best of the best athletes were able to break through and qualify for State. Skyline had a few of those, as well as a few non-qualifying but scoring placements.

          It was a stacked regional, the toughest 4A regional in many events. The Pratt High School track and field team found the sledding tough, as no boys qualified for the State track meet—although several did manage to place and score.
