The Bethel College softball team suffered a serious setback in its post-season hopes after a pair of losses to McPherson College Saturday afternoon at the newly-dedicated Allen Wedel Field on the BC campus.

Bethel lost the first game 8-5 and the second game 21-6.

“They never quit,” Bethel coach Stacy Middleton said. “I’m proud of their effort. Sometimes, things just don’t go in your favor. We didn’t react well in the small ball.”

Bethel took the lead in the first game on a solo home run by Krystin McKelpin with one out. Three singles and a pair of errors led to three McPherson runs in the top of the third.

Indecision on bunts allowed three more runs for McPherson in the top of the fourth on four hits. Judith Salazar had a two-run single in the inning.

Bethel put a runner at third base with one out in the bottom of the fifth, but a strikeout and ground out left the runner stranded.

Bethel opened the bottom of the sixth with a single and a pair of errors on the same play to score a run. With bases loaded and one out, McKelpin drew a walk to drive in a run. A force out at home and a strikeout ended the threat.

McPherson put things away with nine runs in the seventh inning. Romero hit a three-run home run.

Holmes and Romero each finished with five RBIs. Ali Smith, Holmes and Curiel each had three hits.

Katie Schrag went two for five for Bethel.

Sydney Lang went the distance for McPherson, striking out eight. Abbie Hutton took the loss for Bethel. Sydney Bollinger pitched the last two innings.

McPherson improves to 16-17, 2-5 in KCAC play. Bethel falls to 14-13, 5-5 in KCAC play. Bethel plays at 2 p.m. today at home against Friends.

“Our schedule from now on is pretty tough,” Middleton said. “From now on, we’re going to have to buckle down. We’re battling some injuries. There’s not a whole lot of time to work on things. A lot of it is mental.”
