team wins

The Newton High School girls’ soccer team claimed a 10-0 win over Campus Thursday in Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail League Division I play at Fischer Field.

The game was called early on the 10-goal rule. It was Newton’s second 10-goal game this season.

Brookelynn Entz scored six goals with two assists. Aylin Torres, Abbi Jackson and Bekah Tonn each added a goal. Maddie Edson had two assists. Aspen Olson also had an assist.

Newton improves to 12-1, 5-0 in AV-CTL I play. The Railers have won eight straight and have eight shutouts.

Campus falls to 5-7, 0-5 in league play.

Newton plays at 6:30 p.m. today at Andover in a make-up of a game postponed because of inclement weather. Andover is 7-3-2, but has gone 0-2-2 in its last four games.

Newton plays Tuesday at Maize in a game that will determine the AV-CTL I title.

JUNIOR VARSITY — The Newton junior varsity downed Campus 3-0. Kylee Franco scored a goal with an assist. Abbi Jackson and Pricilla Arajuo each added a goal. Newton plays at 5 p.m. today at Andover.

HUTCHINSON – The Newton High School softball team dropped a pair of games Tuesday at Hutchinson.

Newton lost the first game 13-8 and the second game 9-0.

Newton gave up 10 runs in the first two innings of the first game to trail 10-5. Hutchinson added two runs in the third and a run in the fifth. Newton added a run in the fourth and two runs in the sixth.

Maria McGonigal, Emily Peaney and Jayden Walton each had three hits for Newton. Kyndal Bacon drew two walks.

Alejandra Llamas threw three innings for Newton with a strikeout. Zoe Stonehouse threw two innings. Skylar Botterweck threw an inning.

In the second game, Hutchinson led 6-0 after two innings, adding a run in the fifth and two in the sixth.

Celina Perez had two hits for Newton. Bacon drew three walks.

Stonehouse took the loss for Newton, striking out two.

Newton is 1-17, 0-12 in AV-CTL I play. Newton ends the regular season at 4 p.m. today at Goddard Eisenhower.

eighth at Winfield

WINFIELD — The Newton High School boys’ golf team finished eighth Thursday at the Winfield Invitational at the Winfield Country Club.

Chanute won the team title at 329, followed by AC at 343, McP. at 361, Winfield at 383 and Labette County at 383. Newton had a team score of 407.

Jacob Lackey of McP. was the top medalist at 78.

Newton was led by Austin Lackey at 97, followed by Hunter Lujano at 98, Tanner DeGrado at 103, Zach Engelken at 109, Hervey Medina at 112 and Max Willingham at 131.

Newton competes at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail League Division I Championships at the Derby Country Club.
