Skyline lost 58-43 to Attica on Saturday to take 2nd in the 54 Classic at the Thunderdome.
There would be no miracle rally for the Skyline boys basketball team on this night. 24 hours after an amazing third quarter surge propelled them into the finals of the 54 Classic at the Thunderdome, the T-Birds fell to Attica 58-43 on Saturday night.
Skyline had prevailed in a donnybrook earlier this season against Attica, but the Bulldogs got the better of this match-up to claim the championship hardware.
The contest was nip-and-tuck in the first half: Attica led 15-11 after one period; a Sam Fisher buzzer-beater 3 brought Skyline to within 25-24 heading to the break.
SHS’ Tyler Tobin had been held to 4 free throws by ML the previous night. He was more aggressive to the basket against Attica, and got most of his team-high 16 points going to the rack rather than from the arc.
But after Cooper Gates got a bucket to open the second half that gave Skyline a short-lived lead, the rim tightened up for the Thunderbirds the balance of the 3rd quarter. They could only manage 5 more points in the frame. Meanwhile, the Bulldogs begin finding the basket from long range and a barrage of trifectas lifted them to a 44-31 advantage heading to Q4.
Turning the defensive pressure up a notch, Skyline was able to trim their deficit back to 46-38 with 4:00 left as Attica played the delay game when they had the ball.
As the clock ticked away, the Thunderbirds took chances defensively and swarmed to the ball. The Bulldogs kept their composure- hitting most of their chances from the charity stripe and draining the occasional 3-ball for good measure. In garbage time, Attica was able to re-extend their lead to the final score 58-43.
The T-Birds could not pull another rabbit from their hat, and ended up with just their second loss of the season to finish as runners-up in the 54 Classic.
