Pratt High School boys tennis served up a third place finish in their season opener Thursday, a home Invitational at “The Blake.”

Team results were: 1. Haven 33 2. Dodge City 26 3. Pratt 18 4. Ulysses 12 5. Ellinwoo 11

Caden Donnenwerth led the Greenbacks at #1 singles, capturing the title by going 4-0 on the day. Donnenwerth won convincingly in each of his matches to pocket the gold.

His results:

Defeated Degenhardt ELL 7-0

Defeated Harmon DC 7-2

Defeated Wells HAVEN 7-4

Defeated Paul ULY 7-2

“Caden played very well,” said Tate Thompson, head PHS tennis coach. “A couple of his matches seemed like they only took about 5 minutes.”

In #1 Doubles, Chase Folkers and Kale Wilson had a frustrating day, going 0-4 to take 5th. Except for their match against the tourney champs, however, Folkers and Wilson were very competitive against all their opponents. The pair could have finished as high as second if a few more breaks had gone their way. Their results:

Lost to Bookout/ Roble ELL 7-6 (3)

Lost to Ramirez/ Bunkall DC 7-5

Lost to Rohling/ Rohling HAVEN 7-0

Lost to Giesaking/ Gandhi ULY 7-5

Jacob Brucks at #2 singles also had tough luck in a topsy-turvy bracket. Brucks was one of three players to go 1-3, placing him at tie for 3rd, but he lost the tiebreaker (% of games won) to fall into 5th. His results:

Defeated Roble ELL 7-5

Lost to Scheck DC 7-0

Lost to Wells HAVEN 7-2

Lost to Moral ULY 7-4

The #2 Doubles team of Rafe Donnenwerth and Luis Garcia were also victimized by the tiebreaking protocol to fall out of the medals. Going 2-2 on the day placed them in a tie for 2nd, but the tiebreaker dropped them to 4th. Their results:

Defeated Robl/ Ringwald ELL

Lost to Austin/ Thomas DC

Defeated Caffrey/ Montaldo HAVEN

Lost to Barbo/ King ULY
