At the Spearville regional Friday, Skyline qualified 7 events involving 11 athletes to advance to the next level.
There will be almost a dozen Thunderbirds at the State Track Meet this weekend at Wichita’s Cessna Stadium. In order to qualify, competitors must finish in the top four in their event at regional.
At the Spearville 2A regional last Friday, Skyline was able to place some individuals and some relay teams high enough to move on to State. Skyline qualified 7 events involving 11 athletes to advance to the next level. In addition, there were some other T-Birds who had good performances and placed in the meet, just not highly enough to advance to State.
Teamwise, the Spearville girls regional was won by Kiowa County who dominated with 128 points. Kinsley had 57 and Ellinwoo 47 to finish 2nd and 3rd. The Lady T-Birds managed 24 points to place ninth.
On the boys side, Stanton County ran away with the meet, amassing 129. Meade had 54 and Hodgeman County 51. Skyline’s boys put together 33 points to end up in eighth.
Madison Tyler was the top Lady Thunderbird performer, qualifying for State in two individual events and a relay. Tyler took second in the triple jump 33’3.5 and third in the 400m 63.57.
Tyler, along with Kayla Flora, Hayley Roberts and Heidi Roberts took the silver medal in the 4x800 relay at 11:04- also good for a trip to State.
The girls 4x100 relay was close to qualifying, finishing 5th in 53.13. That relay included Sydney Koirth, Kayley Cook, Katelynn McGraw and Madison Tyler.
Another notable performance was Sydney Koirth 7th in shot put 30’11.5. Although falling short of State, Koirth reached the finals at regional.
Individual qualifiers for the Thunderbird boys came in the 3200m, long jump and shot put. Also, the T-Birds earned first place in the 4x800 relay.
In perhaps the highlight of the day, the team of Ryan Adams, Sam Fisher, Mark Schmidt and Colby Shriver pocketed gold with a time of 9:04 in the 4x800 relay.
Among individuals qualifying, Jackson Wallace took 4th in the 3200m 10:52 to advance. Wallace also just missed qualifying in the 1600m 5th 4:58.
Carson Lee’s 42’10 was good for third in shot put. Lee also took 6th in both discus 111’3 and javelin 138’2.
Eliazar Carrasco also heads to Wichita following his 4th place finish in the long jump 19’6.25.
Other T-Birds scored or placed highly, but not enough to advance. Those included:
Cade Swonger 200m 6th 23.97
Ryan Adams 800m 5th 2:09
Sam Fisher 300mH 7th 43.53
Zach Urban Discus 6th 99’3 and shot put 5th 42’2.5.
