The Skyline distance runners broke through for medals at State track over the weekend
With ten athletes at the State track meet over the weekend, Skyline's distance corps scored the only points/ medals for the T-Birds.
In Class 2A boys, Bennington was State champion with 59.5 points. Stanton County was runner-up with 53, then Smith Center with 42. Skyline boys were 40th with 3 points.
Bennington also won the 2A girls meet with 73.5 points. Blue Rapids was runner-up with 48, then Kiowa County third with 39. Skyline's girls did not break into the scoring column.
Jackson Wallace was Skyline's only individual medalist. He mounted the medal stand following the 3200m with 10:33 putting him in 8th place.
The boys 4x800 took 7th 8:33 for the Thunderbirds' best finish of the state meet. Those runners were Mark Schmidt, Sam Fisher, Jackson Wallace and Ryan Adams.
Other T-Birds who competed at State but did not advance to the finals in their events were:
Eliazar Carrasco long jump
19'1.5 Carson Lee shot put 40'1
The Lady T-Birds 4x800 relay posted a 10:51 which was not enough to make the top 8. Runners were Hayley Roberts, Kayla Flora, Heidi Roberts and Madison Tyler.
Senior Madison Tyler also qualified in two events as an individual, but did not make it to finals in either. She ran 62.35 in her 400m preliminary and triple jumped 33'1.25. Neither mark placed her in the top 8, but Tyler was able to wind up her Thunderbird track and field career by competing at State in three events.
Of the ten athletes who competed at State for Skyline, only Tyler and Carson Lee graduate, so that bodes well for the future of T-Bird track and field.
