During the first couple weeks of the season, the Pratt Community College softball team had beaten the teams they should beat while losing to their better opponents.
The Beavers finally picked up a big win yesterday at Angood Field, edging No. 5 Cowley 4-2 in the second game of their Jayhawk Conference doubleheader.
Freshman Hannah Crowe got the win, scattering six hits. She did not walk a batter and gave up just one earned run.
Crowe also went two-for-three at the plate while Charyse Arnold was three-for-four. Ashley Shell went one-for-three with two RBIs.
Pratt, ranked No. 15 in the season’s first NJCAA Division II poll, lost the first game of the day 12-0.
Cowley pitcher Ashley Spencer, a returning All-American, kept the Beaver batters off balance most of the afternoon.
Cowley scored five runs in the top of the third to go up 6-0.
Alyssa Ramirez had two hits, and Alyssa Johnson bunted for a single, but other than that, Pratt was quiet offensively.
Ramirez’s first hit came in the bottom of the third with two outs. She was stranded on base as Spencer struck out the next Pratt batter to end the inning.
In the bottom of the fifth, Johnson laid down a bunt single with one out, then moved to second, catching the Cowley infield off guard.
The Beavers weren’t able to capitalize on it, as Johnson was stranded at second base after Spencer retired the next two batters.
Cowley scratched across a run in the top of the sixth to lead 7-0.
In the bottom of the sixth, Ramirez singled to lead things off, but she was picked off after Spencer struck Charyse Arnold out, and that effectively ended the Beavers’ short-lived threat.
The Lady Tigers scored five runs on five hits and an error in the top of the seventh, making it 12-0.
Pratt did have a pair of baserunners in the bottom of the seventh, but Madison Hughes and Johnson were stranded after getting on via error and walk.
Bre Beckerman took the loss. She was replaced by Ramirez after three innings, but that hardly slowed Cowley’s offense as the Lady Tigers got five hits off Ramirez.
Cowley is now 5-5 on the season and 1-1 in Jayhawk East games.
The Beavers moved to 4-6 on the season and they are 1-1 in Jayhawk Conference — Eastern Division games.
Pratt will host its annual tournament Saturday and Sunday at Angood Field in Lemon Park. Games will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. Sunday.
