Twice in one weekend, the Pratt Community College softball team had chances to beat Seward County, but both times the Beavers wound up on the short side of a 2-1 score.
PCC won their opening game of the Pratt Softball Tournament, but lost their next two games in pool play to take the third seed.
That set up a rematch with Seward County on Sunday afternoon.
The Beavers struck first with a run in the top of the fifth inning.
Madison Hughes reached on an error with one out, then Alyssa Johnson moved Hughes into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt.
Freshman Hannah Crowe followed with an RBI single to center field, putting PCC up 1-0.
Seward County tied things up with a solo home run to lead off the bottom of the seventh, but PCC retired three of the next four batters on a fly ball to shortstop Ashley Shell, a strikeout and a fly ball to second baseman Bre Beckerman.
In extra innings, a runner starts on second base, and PCC got Johnson to third thanks to a sacrifice bunt by Crowe, but she wasn’t able to score in the top of the eighth.
Seward County got a sacrifice bunt and an RBI single to shallow center field to score the winning run in the bottom of the eighth.
Crowe had Pratt’s only hit in the game.
Alyssa Ramirez was the losing pitcher, scattering six hits in the game.
Seward County went on to beat Northern Oklahoma — Tonkawa 4-1 in the championship game.
In Saturday’s tournament opener, the Beavers scored two runs in both the fourth and fifth innings to open up a 6-3 lead on Lamar.
The Runnin’ Lopes got on the board first, but Pratt tied the score at 2 when Johnson stole home as part of a double steal in the bottom of the second inning.
Lamar was up 3-2 after the top of the fourth, but Pratt got a double from Hughes and a two-run shot to center field by Johnson to take a 4-3 lead after four innings.
Freshman pitcher Bre Beckerman and the Beaver defense retired the side in the top of the fifth, then Pratt got two more runs on four hits in the bottom of the fifth.
Charyse Arnold led off with an infield single, then moved to third on Shell’s sacrifice bunt. Arnold came in to score on a sacrifice fly by Ramirez.
With two outs, Lety Perez singled to center field. Hughes followed with a single up the middle, and Johnson’s single past the shortstop scored Perez to put Pratt up 6-3 after five complete.
Lamar got one run in the top of the seventh, but freshman right fielder Ari Borecky made a running catch to end the game.
Johnson led the Beaver offense with three hits and three RBIs. Pratt also got three singles from Arnold.
Shell had a pair of hits and an RBI, while Borecky, Hughes, Perez, and Holly Thielen each had a hit.
