The Pratt Community College men’s and women’s basketball teams ended the pre-Christmas portion of the schedule last Saturday as the Cowley County Community College Tigers came to town and swept the Beavers.

The Lady Beavers were able to open a six point lead at halftime 31-25 before Kelsey Strobel and the Tigers would score a pair of baskets in the first two minutes and then Cari Guyton would score with 17:33 left and Whitney Bates would get a fast break lay-up with 16:06 to put the Lady Beavers up 10 points.

Cowley cut the lead to 2 points before Bates hit a jumper with 10 minutes left in the game. Cowley took its first lead of the game with just under 4 minutes left and a basket by Bates with 1:36 left pulled Pratt within one at 52-51.

The Tigers hit a field goal and then Sarah Johnson scored her only basket of the game with 57.3 left to get Pratt back within one. Cowley made a pair of free throws to go up by 3 points before a Lady Beaver timeout with 20.9 left in the game.

Pratt ran a set play and Ann Pauly was able to drive to the basket but she got fouled with 13.3 left.  The sophomore nailed both free throws to get Pratt back within one.

A quick foul and two free throws by Cowley would again extend the lead to 3. As Pratt was bringing the ball up court against pressure defense the whistle would blow with 5.3 left and an over-and-back call was made. Cowley hit one more free throw to make the final 59-55.

The men’s game started slow as the two teams battled defensively and poor shooting had the Tigers up by one, 7-6, with seven and half minutes gone.  Cowley would then break the game open with an 8-2 run to take a 15-8 lead at the half way point of the first half.

The next three minutes they extended the lead to 14 and went into the halftime break with a 28-16 advantage.

Cowley would quickly open a 16-point lead before the Beavers slowly cut the lead. Trae Beck hit a 3-point shot with 7:47 left to get Pratt within 10 but that would be as close as they would get and Cowley would hang on for a 68-55 win.

Both teams will be off until January 3rd when they will play host to the McPherson College junior varsity teams for a 6 p.m. start before starting conference play in the always tough Jayhawk West.

The Lady Beavers enter the break with a 9-4 record while the men are 8-5.

The women’s side of the conference race has two teams that are currently ranked — Hutchinson at 3 and Seward County at 11.

The Jayhawk West men have Barton ranked 8th and Hutchinson 11th and Dodge City, Garden City, Colby, and Seward County are all receiving votes.

Pratt will open conference play Jan. 7th when they travel to Concordia to play Cloud County.
