A slow start left the Pratt Community College womens basketball team in a 16-0 hole four minutes into Saturday’s game against Butler, and the Beavers never really recovered in an 82-56 loss at the Beaver Dome.
Pratt got on the board with 15:02 left in the first half as Jazmine Bell scored on a putback.
That started a 9-0 run that was capped by Ricci Lambert’s bucket off an assist from Abbey Rudd at the 14:08 mark.
The Beavers later got within one point after scoring seven straight points.
Bell hit a pair of free throws with 8:59 left, Whitney Slater stole the ball, and Corinna Hoyt buried a three with 8:31, then Bell found Dashia Williams open for a bucket, making it a one-point game with 7:24 remaining in the half.
But the Grizzly women responded with an 8-1 run to open up a 31-23 lead with 4:25 left in the half.
They went on to lead 41-32 at halftime and steadily pulled away from there, thanks to 23 turnovers by Pratt.
The Beavers (4-24, 3-11) struggled to hit their shots, making just 16 of 58 in the game, but the turnovers were the real problem.
Butler turned Pratt’s 23 turnovers into 33 points as they improved to 13-15 overall and 7-7 in the conference.
The Grizzlies had four players in double figures as they hit 31 of 55 field goals and five of 12 three-pointers.
Pratt was led by Bell’s 15 points and two steals.
Phylicia Freeman added nine points, five rebounds and three assists.
Lambert, Kiki Pinder, and Williams each finished with seven points for PCC. Williams and Pinder each grabbed five rebounds.
Rudd chipped in with two assists and four of Pratt’s 40 rebounds.
The Beavers did hit 20 of 28 free throws, but they were just four of 25 from long range in the game.
Pratt travels to No. 13 Hutchinson (25-3, 12-2) Wednesday night before finishing the regular season at home against Barton County (12-15, 5-9) on Saturday.
