Beaver baseball falls to Cougars in weekend series

Jayhawk West games continued to be tough for the Pratt Community College baseball team, which fell to 0-8 in the West after losing all four games of last weekend’s series with Barton County.
On Saturday, PCC lost 6-5 and 11-2, and the Beavers dropped Sunday’s doubleheader 15-3 and 15-10.
In Saturday’s opener, the Beavers scored single runs in the first and second innings of the first game, and Barton answered with a run in the bottom of the second to make the score 2-1 after twoinnings.
Barton scratched across a run in the bottom of the third to tie the score at 2-2.  In the top of the fourth inning, Trey DeRouen reached on an error and Skyler Sumner singled to get the offense going.  Ryan Clark delivered an RBI base hit to center field, and Jacob Hollis doubled to score Sumner and Clark to give the Beavers a 5-2 lead.
Barton answered with a run in the bottom of the fourth to make the score 5-3. Barton added three runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 6-5 lead and the Beavers failed to score in the seventh, leaving the Cougars with a 6-5 win.
Joey Hinckley was the starting pitcher and scattered five hits over four innings while striking out three and giving up two earned runs.  Josh Goodman pitched a scoreless fifth inning while striking out one Cougar batter.  Blake McMullen was the hard luck losing pitcher, pitching the sixth inning.  McMullen gave up three unearned runs while giving up two hits and striking out two Barton hitters.
 Barton won the second game 11-2.
On Sunday, Barton’s bats heated up in 15-3 and 15-10 wins over the Beavers.
Matt Burns led the Beaver offense with two RBIs while going four for five at the plate. Sumner was three-for-four and scored two runs.
Joe Kornbrust was three for six on the day, plus had three RBIs and pitched two innings. In those two innings on the mound, he gave up just one hit while striking out three batters.
Hollis went two for six with two RBIs on the day while Zach Sell was also two for six with two doubles and an RBI.
Pratt will host Northern Oklahoma – Tonkawa Saturday in a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. at Stanion Field. The Beavers will play a doubleheader at Brown Mackie, starting at 1 p.m. Sunday in Salina.
