It was a rough way to start Jayhawk West play, as the Pratt Community College baseball team dropped all four games of their series with Butler, held Friday and Saturday at Stanion Field.
The Grizzlies opened the weekend with a 3-0 win Friday afternoon, getting eight hits in the process.
Pratt managed just four hits — two by Joe Kornbrust — in the game, and left five runners stranded.
The Beavers trailed 1-0 in the bottom of the fourth when Kornbrust led off with a single and Aaron Beil moved him into scoring position with a double to left field. But Butler’s pitcher responded with three straight strikeouts to end the threat.
Butler got off to a fast start in game two, scoring nine runs on six hits and two errors in the top of the first, and they went on to win 17-6.
Pratt had eight hits in the game, but the Beavers just weren’t able to overcome their bad start.
Jacob Hollis, Skylar Sumner and Kornbrust each had two hits in the game while Ethan Elrod and Zach Sell had one hit each.
Saturday’s first game saw Pratt jump out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning behind four hits and one Butler error.
With one out, Sumner singled to right field. Kornbrust reached on an error, and Trey DeRouen’s two-out single scored Sumner. Travis Sanders and Beil drew back-to-back walks to score Kornbrust and load the bases for sophomore catcher Cody Passmore.
He singled to center field, scoring DeRouen and Sanders. Ryan Clark followed with a single to left field to score Beil before Butler got the third out.
The Grizzlies turned around and scored five runs in the top of the second, then took an 8-6 lead with a three-run third.
Butler led 9-6 when Pratt came to bat in the bottom of the fourth.
The Beavers got things started with a one-out double by Ethan Elrod. Sumner drew a walk, and the runners moved to second and third on Kornbrust’s grounder to the shortstop.
With two out, Sell hit a three-run shot to right field to tie the game at 9.
Butler took advantage of two walks in the top of the sixth and got both runners across when their third baseman tripled to right center field.
Those would prove to be the winning runs, as neither team pushed a run across in the seventh inning.
Pratt had eight hits from eight different players, but Butler pounded out 14 hits in the game.
The final game of the series was never close as Butler exploded for four runs in the fifth and seven in the ninth to pick up a 15-0 win.
Pratt managed just five hits. Blaine Aldrich had two, as did Hollis. Elrod had the Beavers’ other base hit.
PCC (4-5, 0-4 Jayhawk West) will host the Bethany College JV Tuesday. The doubleheader will begin at 2 p.m. at Stanion Field.
