The Greenback boys ran their record to 8-0 as they were able to jump out to an early lead over Central Kansas League opponent Hesston Swathers on Friday 77-58.

Pratt opened the game by scoring the first 11 points, and this game would see a bunch of runs by both teams, before Hesston would hit a 3-pointer with 2:52 left in the quarter.

The teams traded scores before Skylar Dean hit a half-court shot at the buzzer to put the Greenbacks up 20-11 at the end of the first quarter.

Austin McClain got the first basket of the second quarter and then Hesston went on an eight point run to get within three points at 22-19 with five minutes until half.

The Greenbacks responded with a run of their own and took an 11-point lead into the locker room.

The third quarter would see both teams light up the scoreboard as they combined for 44 points but an 11-point run late in the quarter, the first six from Micah Swank and the last five from B.J. Dean, would provide a cushion that the Swathers could not come back from.

The fourth quarter was much the same as the Greenbacks could almost score at will and half way through the quarter they had a 27-point advantage before Hesston scored the last eight points of the game.

“Skylar Dean had his best offensive game of the season hitting 6 field goals and having 3 assists along with 3 steals,” Coach David Swank said. “I thought BJ was very patient tonight and was rewarded as he hit 7-11 shots in route to 17 points. He had a very complete game adding 7 rebounds and 3 assists.

“Micah really got on a nice roll during the second and third quarters hitting numerous shots. I thought he also really distributed the basketball well tonight during the course of the game. Our kids came to play tonight and it was a lot of fun to watch the basketball move on offense. We had a season high on assists and hit 29 shots shooting almost 60 percent for the game.”

This week the Greenbacks will go to St. John to play in the Lions Club Mid-Winter Classic where they received the number two seed. That seed did not do Pratt any favors as they will get to play Wichita West.  The Pioneers are 2-7 so far this year but they are coming off a 69-56 victory over Wichita South. West will be the most athletic team the Greenbacks have faced this year and they get together on Thursday for an 8:15 scheduled tip.
