Skyline and Pratt high schools have both been practicing in full force in anticipation of the coming season. The following are facts about local teams by the numbers.
1 – Number of teams on this year’s PHS Varsity football schedule that they also played last year. The team? Kingman, which Pratt beat 50-0 on the road.
14 – The average number of minutes spent during a football game actually playing football. The rest of the time is spent huddling, talking in a timeout or if you’re lucky, celebrating something.
34 – School-record win total for PHS volleyball from last season. Coach Dean Rausch returns only three players with starting varsity experience, but should have a strong group of players.
23 – Minimum height in feet for the ceiling above a regulation volleyball court. Good thing most high school gyms are built around 25 feet tall.
11 – The number of newcomers to Coach Kathy Hitz’s Pratt High cross country team. She does return a pair of State qualifiers in Mario Perez and Cheyenne Becker.
1 - Number of state qualifiers from last year’s PHS girls tennis team. With Andrea Clarkson gone, it will be up to a new group of girls to lead the team this season.
71 – Par for the Park Hills Golf Course, where the PHS girl’s golf team will practice and play its lone home meet of the season, an invitational on Sept. 13.
3 - Number of seniors Skyline football must replace this season. Coach Novotny expects the team to do this by committee, rather than having three individuals try and fill those big shoes.
7 - Number of seniors playing volleyball at Skyline. There are also seven freshmen who came out, as well as seven holes to fill from last year’s senior class.
23 - Minimum height in feet for the ceiling above a regulation volleyball court. Good thing most high school gyms are built around 25 feet tall. Also, the number of girls who came out for volleyball at Skyline.
17 – The number of runners at SHS cross country coach Eric Bronson’s disposal. The team is looking to build on last year’s success and has the numbers to make it happen.
5 – Distance in kilometers of a typical boys cross country race. Girls courses typically run 4 km, but sometimes run a 5K. This distance equals 3.107 miles.
