It was a tough night to be a Pratt Gator baserunner, as the Medicine Lodge Warriors worked out of several jams to strand seven Gators and grab a 5-2 win last night at the Green Sports Complex.
The Gators struck first, getting two runs in the bottom of the first, but that would be all the scoring they could muster as their record dropped to 4-2 on the season.
In the bottom of the first, leadoff hitter Travis Theis walked and advanced to second on Landen Struder’s sacrifice grounder to the pitcher.
With two outs, Wyatt Schrag hit a hard grounder down the first base line. The first baseman misplayed it, allowing Theis to score and Schrag to advance to second.
Schrag stole third with Grant Bolen at the plate, then came home when the Warriors’ pitcher was called for a balk.
Bolen and Carson Lee both walked, but were stranded when Cooper Gates struck out to end the inning with Pratt up 2-0.
A couple costly errors allowed the Warriors to score two runs in the top of the second, but Struder got back to back strikeouts to get out of the inning.
After retiring the Gators in order in the bottom of the second, the Warriors used two hits, a walk and an error to score three more runs in the top of the third, taking a 5-2 lead.
The Gators continued to struggle at the plate, as they got nothing going offensively in the bottom of the inning and trailed 5-2 after three complete.
Theis, who relieved Struder to start the third inning, gave up a leadoff single in the fourth, but struck out the next batter and then served up two straight grounders that were easily converted into outs to end the inning.
The Gators stepped up their defense in the top of the fifth as Cooper Gates fielded a hard-hit ball at second base and threw to Schrag at first for out number one. Theis then recorded his fourth strikeout of the game for the second out.
He was behind in the count 3-0 to the next batter, but came back with three straight strikes to end the inning.
In the bottom of the fifth, Nate Kolm drew a walk and stole his way to third base. With one out, Theis also walked, and when Struder worked the pitcher for another walk, the Gators had the bases loaded with just one out.
But Medicine Lodge’s pitcher responded with back-to-back strikeouts to strand the runners and end the game.
The Gators did not have a base hit in the game but took advantage of seven walks and an error to get their baserunners.
Pratt (4-2) will be back in action Wednesday night when they host Kiowa at the Green Sports Complex. The game is scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. on the southeast field, following a doubleheader of Pratt Rangers (12-13 year olds) baseball games.
