So far this season, there has been no place like home for the Pratt Community College womens basketball team, which picked up its second straight win last night in the Dennis Lesh Sports Arena.
The Beavers are now 3-5 on the season and they sport a perfect 2-0 record at home after beating the Friends University junior varsity 67-49 last night.
Pratt led 31-26 at halftime, and allowed Friends to hang around until midway through the second half when they put the game away for good.
Friends had pulled within one at 40-39 on a basket by Tina Clausen with 12:20 to go, but the Beavers responded with a 14-2 run to take control.
Wyneisha Webb started the run with a pair of free throws, and Lindsee Bachicha scored on a putback to make it 44-39 at the 9:38 mark.
A par of three-pointers by Corinna Hoyt, and two straight baskets from Leanda Martinez put PCC ahead 54-41 with 5:12 left in the game.
Bachicha led all scorers with 17 points, a performance that PCC coach Stephanie Shanline has been waiting for all season.
“She’s been frustrated with herself because she wasn’t hitting her shots,” Shanline said of Bachicha. “She came out last night and played really well for us. That’s what she’s capable of.”
Martinez added 14 points whhile Hoyt and Webb each had nine.
Ashton Stout scored eight points and Randa Brown had five.
“Randa’s doing way over what I expected from her when I asked her to play,” Shanline said. “We’ve played 8 games and she’s taken eight or nine charges already. I’m really pleased with her on the defensive end and she’s being more aggressive on the offensive end. I’m just really happy with the way she’s playing.”
Pratt also got three points from Hayley Hunsberger and two from Jazmine Bell.
The Beavers were without the services of post player Sydney Moore, who sat out with a sore ankle sustained while taking a charge late in Tuesdaay’s game against the Bethel College JV.
Even with the win, Shanline was not completely satisfied with heer team’s efforts.
“We missed a ton of easy baskets in the second half, just layups, and we have to capitalize when we get that deep in the paint,” Shanline commented.
“This team’s still playing in spurts. They have the ability to play really well all the time, and they’re just playing when it feels right,” she noted. “It’s really frustrating. We have to play for 40 minutes and not up and down, up and down. They go away from what works and they let teams go on eight to ten point runs, and we’ve got to fix that.”
The bright spot for PCC was an improved effort on the defensive end, as the Beavers cut down on the silly fouls that plagued them Tuesday night.
“I thought they did better defensively last night,” Shanline said. “We’re getting better on the defensive end and we have to continue to improve before conference games start.”
Friends was paced by Nicole Hudspeth and Laycie Pelkey with nine points each. JoyBeth Roberston and Kassie Rogers added eight each for the Falcons.
Complete stats from the game were unavailable, but PCC did make 12 of 18 free throws on the night.
The Beavers will go for their third straight win Monday night when they host the Southwestern College junior varsity. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m .in the Dennis Lesh Sports Arena.
That will be their final tuneup before hosting the PCC Thanksgiving Classic on Nov. 28 and 29. The Beavers will face Northern Oklahoma—Enid on Friday night and Fort Scott Community College on Saturday night.
The PCC men will also play at home for the Classic.
