Fast breaks were the weapon of choice last night for the Northern Oklahoma — Enid Lady Jet, who scored early and often on their way to a 77-57 win over the Pratt Community College Beavers.
The loss drops PCC to 2-4 on the season heading into this weekend’s games at Seward County. The Beavers will face Frank Phillips (Texas) at 2 p.m. Saturday and Clarendon (Texas) at 2 p.m. Sunday in Liberal.
Last night in Enid, the Lady Jets (7-0) raced to a 12-1 lead and they stretched it to 22-5 midway through the first half.
A pair of three-pointers by Amanda Watson cut the lead to 26-13 with 6:54 left in the first half.
The Beavers ended the half on a 7-2 run as Jordan Moss scored on an assist from sophomore Whitney Slater, Laramie Lawrence hit a three and Abbey Rudd scored with 11 seconds to go, cutting the lead to 43-20 at the break.
Northern scored the first nine points of the second half before Rudd got on a roll.
The freshman from Bucklin made a reverse layup at the 16:39 mark, drained a three-pointer with 16:03 to play, and scored off an assist from Jazmine Bell at the 15:25 mark, slicing the Lady Jet lead to 52-27.
Northern’s Darcie Dick hit a free throw, but Rudd answered with a three to make it 53-30 with 14:43 left.
On Pratt’s next possession, Watson — a freshman from Mullinville — was fouled while shooting.
She injured a knee on the play and was replaced by sophomore sharpshooter Corinna Hoyt, who calmly buried both free throws to get Pratt within 21 at 53-32 with 14:09 to go.
From there, the scoring was spread out for both teams, but Pratt was not able to get any closer than 16 points in the final 10 minutes.
The Beavers had a much better effort in the second half, but that first half hole was far too much to overcome against the unbeaten Lady Jets.
Rudd led PCC with 17 points on seven-of-ten shooting from the floor. She also had three rebounds and a steal.
Watson added six points, five rebounds and an assist.
Hoyt chipped in five points, four rebounds, and two steals while Lawrence finished with four points and five rebounds.
Pratt also got four points, an assist and a steal from sophomore point guard Taylor Lockridge.
Kandece Money added four points and three rebounds off the bench, while Moss also finished with four points and a steal.
Slater tossed in four points to go with three assists, two steals and two rebounds while Bell dished out six assists plus had two steals in the game.
Nikera “Kikki” Pinder added two points and a pair of rebounds, and Phylicia Freeman blocked two shots.
PCC hit just 18 of 56 shots, but the Beavers were 12-for-16 at the free throw line.
Northern was led by Dick’s 20 points, and the Lady Jets hit 32 of 70 field goals in the contest.
PCC will be back in action this weekend at the Seward County Pepsi Classic in Liberal.
The Beavers will host PCC’s Annual Thanksgiving Classic next weekend with games at 6 p.m. Nov. 27 and 28 in the Beaver Dome.
