Last Saturday in a very purple Bill Snyder Family Stadium the Bill Snyder led Wildcats defeated the University of Kansas17-10 to end the three game losing streak to the Jayhawks. Under Snyder the Wildcats have won nine straight at home against KU and Snyder is now 14-4 against the Hawks.
Statistically the game was pretty even. At the half K-State had run 32 plays for 166 yards compared to 34 plays for 157 yards for Kansas. The Cats maintained the advantage in the second half finishing the game with 332 yards while the Hawks finished with 301 yards. The time of possession was virtually even.
The difference in the game was the Wildcats defense and running game, and KU turnovers.
Although Todd Ressing passed for 241 yards, KU managed only 60 yards rushing and the Wildcats came up with big plays throughout the game. Darrell Stucky returned the opening kickoff 67 yards to the KSU 32, but the fast start was stopped at the 13 and the Cats forced a missed field goal attempt. KU moved the ball to the KSU 30 on their second possession but again the threat was stymied by Emmanuel Lamur’s third interception of the season.
With 5:02 remaining in the second quarter the Wildcats forced the first of two fumbles. John Houlik recovered the first at the KU 24 yard line, but the Cats failed to take advantage. The second, forced by Houlik and recovered by Lamur at the KU 43 set up the Wildcats first touchdown.
Grant Gregory connected with Lamark Brown for a 31-yard touchdown to add to an earlier 47-yard Josh Cherry field goal and the Cats led 10-7 with 20 seconds remaining in the half.
The three second half Jayhawk possessions netted only three points. The first possession was three and out, and the last two 78 and 57 yard drives.
The Cats forced field goal attempts on both long drives, and only on the second did Jacob Branstetter finally make his first of three attempts. Not only did the drives result in only three points, but also consumed nearly 14 minutes of the half.
In addition to stalling most KU scoring drives the Cats also presented a ground attack the Jayhawks struggled to stop. Daniel Thomas accounted for 185 of the Cats 266 rushing yards, including runs of 10, 11, 12,19,20, 21, and 40 yards. In his first season he has now ran for 1,087 yards, and is one of nine in school history to break the 1000-yard barrier in a season.
The Cats ground attack was at its best on the critical opening possession of the second half, and the final drive of the game. The running game accounted for all 84 yards of the first second half drive and consumed nearly 8 minutes.
Thomas accounted for 63 of the 84 yards and his five yard touchdown run gave the Cats their only, but deciding, touchdown of the half.
The final drive, again without a pass, garnered only 36 yards, but ran the final 5:20 off the clock and prevent any late game comeback. Twice Gregory converted third downs. The first, a 9-yard run and the second an 8 yard run. Gregory nearly equaled his 66 passing yards with 59 rushing yards.
At 4-2, Kansas State remains atop of the North division. A win at home this weekend over the Missouri Tigers would be one step closer to the division title and would qualify the Wildcats for a bowl game.
The Missouri Tigers are 5-4 on the year but only 1-4 in Big 12 play and they are coming off a shocking upset by Baylor who beat the Tigers 40-32.
Two weeks ago they collected its only conference victory when they beat Colorado in Boulder 36-17.
Sophomore quarterback Blaine Gabbert has thrown for an average of 260 yards a game this year with 17 touchdowns and the Tigers have the 21st best passing team in the NCAA. Senior wide receivers Danario Alexander and Jared Perry have 14 touchdown receptions between them as Alexander has 71 catches for over 1,000 yards and Perry has 43 receptions and 687 yards. Two hundred and twenty five pound junior tailback Derrick Washington has rushed for 562 yards and has scored five touchdowns.
The Tiger rushing defense is ranked 17th in the nation and is led by senior linebacker Sean Weatherspoon who has 84 tackles so far this season with 11 of those being tackles for loss. Red-shirt freshman defensive end Aldon Smith has 15 tackles for loss and nine sacks.
The Kansas State Wildcats look to run its win streak at Bill Snyder Family Stadium to six games as they have been very good in Manhattan especially the defense.
The defense has given up only 10.8 points a game, less than 40 yards rushing, and only 233 total yards. The offense led by All-Big 12 candidate Daniel Thomas and Grant Gregory will look to work their magic again.
This is another must win game for K-State as they look to hold onto the division lead and become bowl-eligible before heading to Lincoln Nebraska next week to close out its regular season.
The Wildcats, on senior day, move to 5-2 in Big 12 play as the “Bill” again is rocking as the coaches, players, and fans enjoy a great day and a big victory.
