Last year, Sarah Mason led the girls golf team throughout the season, carding low scores and helping the team any way she could.

Now, it will be up to a trio of seniors to pick up the slack and lead the team against new teams from the Central Kansas League.

Jordi Garrett, Ellie Eastes and Samantha Snell are all back for the Greenbacks, and will golf 1-3 (not necessarily in that order) on Coach Kerry Thieme’s roster. She also plans to have junior Abby Skaggs and sophomore Anna Stotts round out the varsity roster.

“They’ll be competing as individuals for the low score, and the top 10 will medal,” Thieme said. “And as a team, you’ll take the top four scores out of your six girls. And that computes as your team score.”

With those five locked in on the varsity roster, JV coach Crystal Kohman will have plenty of younger girls for her team as well, with junior Katie Lathrop and sophomore Taylor Fuhr joining with three freshmen, Kendra Miller, Rebekkah Wald and Cheree Eggleston.

For most of the tournaments, the girls will play just nine holes, except for a select few tournaments where they will play the full 18 holes.

Thieme said she was grateful to the community and the people out at Park Hills Golf and Supper Club for reaching out to her team.

“Usually when you have kids out on a course, the regulars think the kids will tear up the course, but the community has really reached out to this team,” she said. “We have had people donating clubs and doing whatever they can to help.”

The team’s first meet will be on Tuesday, Aug. 31 at Nickerson.
