One of the best golf instructors in the country is in town, and Tuesday night, a small group of ladies got to benefit from her teaching.

Penny Zavichas, who co-founded the Craft-Zavichas Golf School, got to know Nancy Kerr when Kerr came down to Arizona for one of Zavichas’ week-long golf schools. Kerr asked her if she would ever consider coming to Pratt and she is now putting on her second clinic in Pratt.

“Instead of them coming to me, I’m coming to them,” Zavichas said. “We’ll mainly work on short-game stuff today.”

The three-hour session drew a small group of ladies from the Green Valley Golf Course as well as the Park Hills Country Club. Her previous sessions have drawn golfers from Hutchinson and even Wichita.

Zavichas, who is based out of Pueblo, Colo., has been teaching golf for “a long time.” She played competitively on the LPGA tour from 1962-1971, before transitioning to teaching, which she has done ever since. Over the years she has drawn many accolades, including induction into the Colorado Golf Hall of Fame and a recent induction into the LPGA Teaching and Club Professionals Hall of Fame, of which only 16 women currently belong.

However, all of her success on a national scale hasn’t stopped her from traveling around and conducting clinics for anyone who is willing to learn.

Kerr, who has Zavichas as her guest while she’s in town and organized the event, said she is happy to see Zavichas come back.

“Having her here is a really good way to keep interest in the game for some of our ladies,” Kerr said.

Zavichas’ golf school has been voted into the top-25 golf schools in the country as rated by Golf Magazine multiple times. Her school is staffed with multiple PGA/LPGA teachers, giving her the chance to conduct her own clinics on site throughout the Midwest.

The ladies started the evening in the sand trap, working on various shots from the bunker. Later, they worked on everything else around the green, such as chipping, pitching and putting.
