Thanksgiving Classic brings ten teams to PCC

The PCC Thanksgiving Classic will bring ten total basketball teams to Pratt Community College this Friday and Saturday.

Womens Teams

Dodge City Community College Conquistadors (4-3)
Dodge City, KS
Dodge City has won four straight games after starting the season 0-3.
The Conquistadors are led by April Weaver’s 21.1 points and 6.7 rebounds per game. Samantha Askew is averaging a double-double with 13.4 points and 11.3 boards, and Robin Parker (11.9 points, 8.3 rebounds) is also a key contributor.
Dodge City is hitting just 39.4 percent of its shots this season, and the Conquistadors have turned the ball over an average of 27 times per game.
The Conqs were picked to finish ninth in the Jayhawk West. They will take on Fort Scott at 2 p.m. Friday and Northern Oklahoma—Enid at 2 p.m. Saturday.


Fort Scott Community College Greyhounds (3-3)
Fort Scott, KS
The Greyhounds have the nation’s steals leader in sophomore guard Leondra Doomes-Stephens, a second-team All-Jayhawk East selection last season. She averages 5.83 steals, 7.5 rebounds and 19.5 points per game while shooting 60 percent from the floor.
Fort Scott is also getting 17.3 points per game from Valencia Kelly, and four players average at least six rebounds per game.
The Greyhounds rank sixth nationally in field goal percentage at 49 percent for the season.
Fort Scott will face Dodge City at 2 p.m. Friday, and Pratt at 6 p.m. Saturday.

Northern Oklahoma College—Enid Jets (7-2)
Enid, OK
NOC—Enid has one of the nation’s most effective post players in Deeva Vaughn, who averages 21.3 points and 10.4 rebounds per game. The freshman has made 62.3 percent of her field goals this season, and ranks in the top 35 nationally in all three of those categories.
Classmate Darcie Dick is averaging 5.22 assists per game for the Jets, who had three starters returning from the 2007-08 team.
NOC—Enid is averaging 78.7 points per game, and allowing just 58.9. The Jets are hitting 43.7 percent of their field goals and 63.8 percent from the charity stripe.
NOC—Enid will face Pratt at 6 p.m. Friday in a rematch of the Beavers’ Nov. 5 season opener, which the Jets won 79-59 in Enid. The Jets will then take on Dodge City at 2 p.m. Saturday.

Mens Teams

Barton County Community College Cougars (9-0)
Great Bend, KS
With six players averaging at least ten points per game, the Barton County Community College Cougars are off to a 9-0 start.
Barton County is putting up 96 points per game, while their opponents are averaging just 59.6 points per night.
Nyika Williams, a 6-7 sophomore forward, is leading the Cougars with 13.8 points and 9.1 rebounds per game while shooting 68 percent from the floor.
Sophomore guard Josh Martin is averaging 6.2 assists per game, while 6-2 sophomore guaard Corey Bingham is also handing out four assists per outing.
The Cougars have outrebounded their opponents by an average of 17 rebounds per game (51 to 34). Barton has outscored their opponents 415-243 in the first half this season. They are shooting 37.4 percent from long range, but just 59 percent from the free throw line.
Barton County is picked to finish third in the Jayhawk West after going 23-8 last year.

No. 3 (DII) Cecil College Seahawks (5-0)
North East, MD

Ranked third in NJCAA Division II, the Cecil College Seahawks are 5-0 overall and 2-0 in Maryland Junior College Conference games.
The Seahawks are averaging 93.2 points per game while giving up just 72 a night.
They are led by Antonio Haymon, who averages 19.5 points and eight rebounds per game while shooting 51.9 percent from the floor.
A.J. Spencer leads the team in assists at eight per game, while also averaging 10.5 points and over two steals a game.
Will Sanborn (11 points per game), Omar Strong (10.7 points per game, 11-29 from three-point range), and Brandon Greene (9.2 points and 10.5 rebounds per game) are also key contributors for Cecil.

Friends University JV Falcons (1-3)
Wichita, KS

The Falcons’ junior varsity squad is comprised entirely of freshmen and sophomores, and 11 of the 13 players on their roster are from Kansas.
Friends defeated Labette 76-67 in their season opener Oct. 31, but the Falcons have since dropped three straight to community college teams.
They are coming off a 69-67 loss at Hesston College, an NJCAA Division II team, on Nov. 20.
Friends is shooting 36.88 percent from the floor while averaging 23 turnovers and 37.5 rebounds per game. They have been outrebounded in their two worst losses (88-33 at No. 1 Cowley, and 76-62 at Butler).

Independence Community College Pirates (3-4)
Independence, KS

The Pirates, who finished second in the Jayhawk East with a 26-6 record last year, started this year’s campaign with three straight wins, but have lost four straight to fall below .500.
Two of those losses came by a combined 17 points to 8-0 Seward County, and the others were a four-point defeat to Lamar Colorado and an eight-point loss to Seminole State, a team that the Pirates beat by seven earlier in the season.
Independence is led by sophomore twins Daniel and Donald Rowe, who both average 15.7 points per game, and sophmore forward Michael Craion.
Donald Rowe also averages nearly four assists per game, and Craion is the Pirates’ leading rebounder at 9.3 boards per game.
The Pirates were picked to finish third in the Jayhawk East this season.

Neosho County Community College Panthers (4-3)
Chanute, KS
The Panthers, picked to finish fifth in the Jayhawk East, will be looking for their first win away from home this season when they begin Classic play Friday afternoon.
Neosho County started the season 2-0, scoring 120 and 124 points in those games, before losing to Pratt on Nov. 11. Since then, the Panthers have also lost to Brown Mackie and Cloud County.
The Panthers are led by sophomore forward Mark Gomilla, an honorable mention All-Jayhawk East selection last year. The 6-5 Gomilla is averaging 22.6 points and 10.9 rebounds per game, while hitting 59 percent of his field goals.
Neosho’s Allen Jones is averaging 10.3 points and 3.8 assists per game, and the Panthers are also getting over nine points a game from Justin Fairman, Delray Mills and D’Andre Tomlin. Fairman is also averaging nine rebounds per game, and Richard Oppitz is grabbing an average of 9.7 boards per game.
The Panthers are shooting 37.3 percent from three-point range this season, but they have also turned it over 18.6 times per game.
