Liberty Middle School’s seventh grade football team racked up 353 yards of offense in a 30-14 win over Conway Springs last night.
The Greenbacks got a 63-yard touchdown run by Mac Callaway on the first play from scrimmage. Bryson Cruz, Brett Forshee, Evan Fowler, Garrett Johnston, Christian Kurz, and Taylor White provided good blocking on the run, according to LMS coach Mike Forshee.
Conway Springs scored a touchdown and added the two-point conversion in the first quarter.
Cesar Regalado scored the final four touchdowns for LMS, which gained 348 yards on the ground.
Liberty limited Conway Springs to just 152 yards of total offense, and 93 of that came on one play late in the fourth quarter.
Brendan Pribil had a sack, while Shawn Ramos and Cruz each had tackles for a loss.
Callaway recorded six tackles on the night, while Forshee made five and a half stops. Cruz was in on four and a half tackles, while Ramos and Regalado each had four.
“After a defensive adjustment in the first quarter, the kids responded by shutting down the Cardinal offense,” coach Forshee said. “The outside linebackers and cornerbacks (Ryan Landry, Brennan Fuss, Will Fellhoelter, Trae’ Forman, Zach Will and Shawn Ramos) did a great job of staying home and doing their job against the single wing offense,” coach Forshee said. “The defensive line of Bryson Cruz, Cooper Crump, Brett Forshee and Brendan Pribil did a great job of controlling their gaps.”
“Our kids are really improving, something we talk about all the time and expect every day at practice,” he added. “The offensive line is doing a great job and our backs are running with a purpose.”
The LMS eighth grade will play Monday at Hoisington. Game time is 5 p.m. The seventh grade Greenbacks will play Tuesday at Clearwater. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m.
