A 16-0 run that started midway through the first quarter set the Skyline High School girls up for yet another comfortable win last night at Skyline.
The Lady T-birds used the run to open up a 20-2 lead early in the second quarter as they went on to beat Stafford 48-15.
The run started when Amy Jo Maphet got a layup thanks to a steal by Leah McPherson with 4:45 left in the first quarter.
At the four-minute mark, Sadee Kumberg scored on a putback.
That was followed by baskets by Maphet and Natali Jones, then a steal and layup by Jones for a 14-2 lead with 2:07 left in the first.
Kaitlyn Swonger got a steal that led to a layup for Maphet with 52 seconds to go, and Jones scored on a layup with six seconds on the clock.
Skyline hit nine of 13 field goals — including five layups — in the first quarter while Stafford was one-for-seven.
A Victoria Sanders layup off a steal by Maphet made it 20-2 with seven minutes left in the second.
After Bailey Rankin scored for Stafford with 6:41 left in the second quarter, Skyline ran off nine straight points to open up a 29-4 lead when Whitney Renner drained a jump shot from the elbow with 2:35 left in the half.
A free throw by Kumberg and a bucket by Tia Gilleece gave Skyline a 32-6 lead at halftime.
The Lady T-birds hit 15 of 27 field goals in the first half and out-rebounded Stafford 17-10, plus took advantage of ten Lady Trojan turnovers.
Stafford connected on just three of 17 field goals and they missed both free throw attempts in the first half.
Skyline had nine players score in the first half and eight Lady T-birds had at least one rebound as coach Jimmy Lee was able to use his entire bench early in the game.
The tempo of the game slowed to a crawl in the second half as both teams worked their offenses patiently and waited for wide open looks at the basket.
Skyline scored the first four points of the third quarter as McPherson got a basket and Jones hit two free throws for a 36-6 lead two minutes into the quarter.
Deanna Kocher, who led Stafford with nine points, scored for the Lady Trojans, but Skyline scored the last five points of the quarter to take a 41-8 lead into the fourth.
The teams each put up seven points in the fourth quarter as Skyline cruised to a 48-15 win.
Jones led a very balanced effort with 11 points despite sitting out two entire quarters. She also had an assist and a steal in the contest.

Maphet was a big part of the fast start, scoring all eight of her points in the first quarter while also tallying three steals, three assists and a block in the game.

Skyline also got four rebounds from Ashton Lee and Audra Howell while Sara Venters had three rebounds and a steal.

SHS had a 33-17 rebounding advantage that included 12 offensive rebounds.
The Lady T-birds (13-0) are ranked third in this week’s Wichita Eagle and Hutchinson News polls, and they’ll be looking for win number 14 Friday night against Burrton.
Friday is Skyline’s Homecoming, and the varsity girls game will tip off at 6:30 p.m. with the boys action following at 8 p.m.
After those games, Skyline will play three straight on the road before hosting No. 6 Central Christian in the Feb. 19 regular season finale.
