Great weather greeted the Skyline High School cross-country teams when they opened the season at Meade Thursday afternoon.
“We had about the best weather you could ask for on our first meet out,” SHS coach Eric Bronson said. “You never know what to expect on your first meet. Whether the kids have experience running in meets or not, the first one is hard to make predictions for.”
Skyline took two girls and five boys to the meet, though several other team members will compete at future meets.
“Really, I am very pleased with all of my runners. Several were struggling with health issues that held them back a bit, but they still met the challenge of the hilly course,” Bronson said. “Meade is a nice race to start with--there are plenty of small schools, but quite a few runners.”
In all, 151 runners competed in the varsity and junior varsity races.
Junior Chelsey Swim won the 12th place medal, finishing the girls varsity 4K race in 19:18. Classmate Darrian Wannow finished 23rd in 20:43.
“Chelsey and Darrian both had great starts and finishes in their race. They fell back a little during the course of the race, but stayed within striking distance of the competition,” Bronson said.
Karson Becker took 22nd in the boys 5K, completing the course in 20:36. Junior Jed Brenner was 34th in 21:44 and senior Colt Hoeck ended up 44th in 22:54.
“Karson was a nice surprise in the boys race,” Bronson said of the sophomore. “He worked his way up, runner by runner, at the beginning of the race.”
Sophomore A.J. Becker was 24th in the boys JV race, and sophomore Brett Schaffer took 31st. Becker finished the 5K course in 27:13, and Schaffer had a time of 36:49.
“I was very pleased with how well our team members encouraged and supported our runners out on the course,” Bronson said. “I’m very excited about our meet here next week. I hope we can build some real enthusiasm for cross country at SHS.”
Skyline will host an invitational next Thursday, with races beginning at 4:30 p.m.
