Miss Leavenworth County Belinda Post found her way into the winner’s circle for a second night at the Miss Kansas Pageant, earning a preliminary swimsuit award. She was joined in the spotlight by Miss Yellow Brick Road Shameem Kauffman for evening wear and Miss Wooded Hills Paula Prosser for talent.
Post now owns two of the silver trays, having won a preliminary talent award on Thursday. A feature twirler for Kansas State University and a dancer, exercise and a healthy diet are a part of life, and she has added cardio workouts and running in preparation for a third try for the Miss Kansas title.
“The things I want to achieve in my life, I have to stay focused for,” Post said.
Finishing in the top 8 a year ago and as fourth runner up at the 2007 pageant, Kauffman said she feels a lot more confident this year; is a completely different woman. A new peacock blue and silver dress, purchased just a week ago, captured the judges’ attention.
She has earned an associate’s degree in business at Seward County Community College and is taking dance classes at the Los Angeles Performing Arts Center.
Prosser opened Friday’s talent competition with “American Trilogy” and a set a standard no other contestant could exceed. With only 90 seconds to perform, she noted that it is hard to find a good song to show her range and personality, and in fact, the trilogy was cut to a two-song medley of “Dixie” and “Battle Hymn of the Republic.”
Prosser has been singing and performing since she was three and taking lessons since age 8. She is a music education major with an emphasis in music therapy at the University of Kansas.
Special awards were presented at a celebration party following the preliminary show. Winners are as follows:
Miss America Academic Scholarship Award: Miss Santa Fe Trail Cassi Reimer
Tara Dawn Holland Community Service Award: Miss Leavenworth County Belinda Post
Janet McEntarfer Memorial Scholarship: Miss Maple Leaf Erica Mahan
CBIZ Accounting Scholarship: Miss Emerald City Staci Klinginsmith
Miss America Community Service Award: Miss Augusta Lauren Werhan
Michelle Walthers Character Award: Miss Prairie Wind Lauren Coston
Jennifer Vannatta Inspiration Award: Miss Hay Capital Briane Falls
Megan Bushell Business Ambassador Award: Miss Flint Hills Becki Ronen
The final night of the Miss Kansas Pageant begins with a pre-show at 7:30 p.m. Saturday night and ends with the crowning of Miss Kansas 2009.
